When video calls freeze halfway through a client meeting and cloud files take minutes to open, the issue is rarely just “slow WiFi”. A busy office network has to support laptops, mobiles, printers, meeting-room screens, cloud software and guests at the same time. Knowing how to improve office wifi speed starts with finding where the delay is happening, rather than replacing equipment at random.
For London businesses, the problem can be made worse by thick walls, older buildings, neighbouring wireless networks and offices that have expanded faster than their IT setup. The right fix might be a router setting, a better access point layout, new cabling or a broadband upgrade. It depends on the evidence.
Check whether broadband or WiFi is the problem
Start by separating the internet connection from the wireless network. Connect a laptop directly to the router or network switch with an Ethernet cable, then run a speed test. Repeat the test on WiFi in the same location.
If the wired result is slow too, your WiFi is not the main fault. Check the broadband package, router line status and any outages with your provider. A small office relying on a basic residential-grade connection may simply not have enough capacity for several people on video calls, using cloud backups and downloading large files at once.
If wired speeds are healthy but WiFi is poor, focus on coverage, wireless congestion and the equipment itself. Test in several places: beside the router, at regular desks, in meeting rooms and at the furthest point of the office. Record the results, including the time of day. Put the router and access points in the right places

Reduce wireless interference and congestion
WiFi shares radio space with nearby networks and, on some bands, other household and office devices. In a multi-tenant building, dozens of neighbouring networks can be competing for the same channels. Choosing settings automatically is convenient, but it does not always produce the best result.
Modern dual-band or tri-band equipment can use 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and, where supported, 6 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band travels further through obstacles but is usually busier and slower. The 5 GHz band generally offers better speed and capacity at shorter ranges. Newer 6 GHz services can be excellent in suitable environments, although older laptops and phones will not be able to use them.
Set staff devices to use the appropriate faster band where possible, while retaining 2.4 GHz for older equipment or devices that are a long way from an access point. Channel selection also matters. An engineer can scan the local wireless environment and assign channels that minimise overlap with nearby offices.
Avoid placing wireless equipment beside cordless phone bases, microwave ovens or Bluetooth-heavy equipment. These will not always cause a problem, but they can create frustrating intermittent faults that are difficult to spot from a single speed test.

Separate staff, guest and business devices onto different wireless networks. A guest network gives visitors internet access without allowing them onto company devices, printers or shared folders. Where your equipment supports it, use traffic management to give priority to work that suffers most from delay, such as voice calls, video meetings and cloud phone systems. This is not a substitute for enough broadband capacity, but it can stop less urgent activity such as updates or large downloads from taking over the connection during working hours.
Schedule cloud backups, major operating system updates and large file transfers outside peak periods. Keeping machines patched is necessary, but allowing every laptop to download a major update at 10am can make the office feel unusable. A managed update policy gives you more control.
Use wired connections where they make sense
WiFi is convenient, not always the best choice for fixed equipment. Desktop PCs, servers, network storage, CCTV recorders, printers and meeting-room systems often perform more reliably on Ethernet. Wiring these devices reduces demand on the wireless network and gives them a consistent connection.
This is especially useful for businesses working with large design files, video footage, data backups or shared databases. Even excellent WiFi may not match a properly installed wired connection for sustained transfers. Network cabling is an investment, but it can remove a persistent bottleneck and make future office changes easier to manage.
Check the switches and cables too. An older 100 Mbps switch can restrict a network even if the broadband service and WiFi equipment are much faster. Damaged or poorly terminated cables may cause devices to drop to lower speeds. These faults can look like a WiFi issue when the real problem is in the wired network behind it.
Replace equipment that is no longer fit for the office
A router supplied years ago by an internet provider may be fine for a flat, but it is not necessarily designed for a growing business. Older WiFi standards, limited processor capacity and a low maximum device count can all lead to slowdowns, dropped connections and poor coverage.
Look for signs that hardware is holding you back: the router needs frequent restarts, devices disconnect at busy times, some rooms never receive a usable signal, or newer laptops perform no better than old ones. Firmware should also be kept up to date, both for performance and security. Update it carefully and outside business hours, as an interrupted update can take a network offline.
Do not buy equipment on headline speed alone. Use a strong, unique WiFi password and modern encryption. Remove former staff devices where appropriate, change default router administrator details and review the connected-device list regularly. If an employee reports slow performance on one machine only, check for malware, sync errors or an outdated wireless driver before changing the whole network.
